Why do laptop keyboards stop working?

There can be several reasons why a computer keyboard stops working. One of the most common causes is physical damage to the keyboard itself. For example, if you accidentally spill water or any other liquid on the keyboard, the keys may become unresponsive or stop working altogether. Similarly, if you drop your laptop or hit it against a hard surface, it can damage the keyboard and cause it to stop working. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a loose or damaged cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard. Additionally, if your laptop’s battery is low or if it is overheating, it can cause the keyboard to malfunction.

Another possible reason why a laptop keyboard stops working is due to a software issue. For instance, if you have recently installed new software or updated your operating system, it may have caused a conflict with your keyboard drivers, resulting in malfunctioning or unresponsive keys. Similarly, if you have accidentally disabled the keyboard in the device manager or through a hotkey combination, it can cause the keyboard to stop working. In some cases, a malware or virus infection can also cause keyboard problems, as it can interfere with the communication between the keyboard and the computer.

What to do when your computer’s keyboard stops working

If your computer keyboard stops working, there are several things you can do to troubleshoot the problem. First, try restarting your computer. Sometimes, a simple restart can fix the issue by resetting the drivers and software. If this doesn’t work, check if there are any loose or damaged cables connecting the keyboard to the motherboard. If you find any, try reconnecting them or replacing them if they are damaged. You may need to open up your laptop to access the keyboard cable and motherboard.

Another option is to check for software-related issues. Check the device manager to see if the keyboard is listed and enabled. If not, try reinstalling the keyboard drivers or updating them. You can also try a system restore to a point when the keyboard was working properly. Additionally, try scanning your computer for malware or viruses, as these can also cause keyboard problems. If none of these solutions work, you may need to consider getting a replacement keyboard or seeking professional repair services.
